Fitzhugh to Jefferson (Letter 7)

In depth: The Peregrine Fitzhugh Letters 1780–1807

To Thomas Jefferson (and the public) from Peregrine Fitzhugh

15 Sept 1797

This letter is written from Fitzhugh to Jefferson and the general public. Fitzhugh is indignant that his friend Thomas Jefferson is being defamed based on something he supposedly wrote in a letter to Fitzhugh about Adams. Even in his indignation, Fitzhugh reverts back to flowery prose. Fitzhugh is writing this letter to the public denying this and defending Thomas Jefferson.

Historical Background for this letter

Col. Fitzhugh still lives in Ann Arundel, Maryland, and resided there until he moved to Geneva, N.Y., in 1799. The country is still nervous about the possibility of declaring war against France.
